Which skin lesions require surgical removal?
Skin lesions can vary widely, and while many are harmless, some may need to be removed. This may be necessary for aesthetic reasons, or because the lesion may show malignant features or carry a risk of malignant transformation.

A medical examination and thorough assessment help determine whether surgical intervention is necessary. The most common skin lesions include:
- Mole removal: Although moles are typically harmless, changes in their size, shape, or color may indicate the need for surgical procedure.
- Wart removal: Caused by viral infection, warts most commonly appear on the hands, feet, face, or sometimes in the genital area. Although they are usually not benign, they may still cause discomfort or concern.
- Skin tag removal: Skin tags are small growths that extend from the surface of the skin and are often removed for aesthetic purposes or due to irritation.
- Lipoma removal: Lipomas are slow-growing fatty lumps that typically develop beneath the skin and feel soft to the touch.
- Fibroma removal: Fibromas are benign growths that arise from connective tissue. They can appear in hard and soft forms – our surgeons are experienced in removing both types.
- Keloid removal: These non-cancerous scar tissue growths may develop after trauma or surgery and, unlike normal scars, can grow excessively over time. Removal may be necessary if they become painful or aesthetically bothersome.

What happens during a dermatologic surgical procedure?
During the initial consultation, our doctor examines the affected area of skin and recommends the most appropriate method of removal. In most cases, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, allowing it to be carried out comfortably and without pain. Depending on the size and location of the lesion, the procedure usually takes around 15–30 minutes.
The aim of surgical removal is to minimize scarring while ensuring complete excision. Suture removal usually takes place between 10 days and 2–3 weeks after the procedure, based on the treatment plan agreed upon during your personal consultation.

HELPFUL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE AND AFTER SURGERY
- Before surgery
- Before the procedure, a medical consultation is necessary to discuss the treatment in detail and make sure all of your questions are answered. There is no need to arrive on an empty stomach or to avoid drinking fluids beforehand.
- If you have a referral from a dermatologist, the doctor will already be informed about the nature of the skin lesion, allowing the treatment to begin more efficiently and quickly. A referral can help simplify the process, especially if a diagnosis has already been established.
- After surgery
- In the first few days we recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity. For facial wounds, please avoid bending forward and, if possible, sleep with your head elevated for 3 days.
- The wound area should be kept clean and dry to support proper healing and reduce the risk of infection. Make sure the wound does not come into contact with water for the first 3 days, and if the dressing becomes wet replace it with a dry one. Facial wounds, however, must not come into contact with water at all. The sterile adhesive strips applied to these areas do not need to be changed until stitch removal and all wounds should be protected from soaking for at least 1 week after the surgery.
- The dressing should be changed daily or every other day until the stitches are removed. Each time the dressing is changed, the wound should be disinfected with Octenisept, Cutasept spray, or Betadine. We recommend using a breathable adhesive dressing, such as Omnistrip or SteriStrip, to cover the area.
Mild tenderness and a feeling of tightness are completely normal after the procedure. In some cases, swelling may also occur (especially after facial procedures), although it usually resolves within a few days. During the first few days, you may gently cool the area with a gel ice pack for 2–3 minutes at a time, repeating this about every 15 minutes, if needed. Slight oozing during the first 3 days can also be part of a natural healing process.
Please note that the wounds require sun protection for several months, which is why direct sunlight, tanning beds, saunas and excessive heat should be avoided during this period.
If any issues arise: if you experience pain, you may safely take any pain reliever that you are not allergic or sensitive to, except for Aspirin. If you experience bleeding, apply gentle pressure to the wound for 30 minutes. If you notice redness, discharge, warmth, firmness, or increasing sensitivity around the wound, please contact us as soon as possible!

For certain skin lesions, histopathological examination of the removed tissue is recommended, as it helps to provide an accurate diagnosis. Results are usually available within 2 weeks. This is particularly important if a skin lesion changes in shape, size, color or becomes tender or painful. Our clinic will, of course, arrange this for you and will keep you informed in a timely manner of any further steps, if needed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Which skin lesions may require removal?
Skin lesions that change in size, shape, color, become tender or are exposed to ongoing mechanical irritation may be recommended for surgical removal. We also offer removal of lesions that are aesthetically bothersome or affect your comfort.
How safe is a skin lesion removal?
Skin lesion removal is generally a very safe procedure when performed by a qualified medical professional. At OralMed Studio, all such procedures are carried out by experienced doctors using advanced techniques and modern equipment. Each treatment is tailored to the lesion’s individual characteristics as part of a personalised treatment plan.
Is the procedure painful?
Skin lesion removal is performed under local anesthesia, so the procedure itself is painless. Mild discomfort, tightness, or swelling may occur afterwards, but these symptoms typically resolve quickly.
How long does the procedure take?
The removal of smaller skin lesions can usually be completed in about 15–30 minutes. In the case of larger lesions, the procedure may take a little longer.
When is a dermatology referral recommended?
A dermatology referral is not required, but it may be helpful if the skin lesion has already been diagnosed previously or if it shows suspicious features.
How long does it take for the wound to heal?
Healing time usually ranges from 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the size of the lesion. The stitches are typically removed after 10 days to 2–3 weeks.
Will my wound leave a scar?
All surgical wounds heal with some scarring, although the extent of scar formation differs individually, but in cases of increased scarring tendency, silicone-based creams or gels may help reduce its appearance.
What happens if the lesion turns out to be malignant?
If the examination shows that the lesion is malignant, we will guide you through the next steps with clear, personalised information and support. You will not be left alone with the results — we work closely with dermatology specialists to help ensure appropriate follow-up care.
